How to Write Effective ChatGPT Prompts for Training Videos

"Clarity in your prompts creates brilliance in your content—design with purpose, and your training videos will inspire, engage, and transform. " ~Waleed Alani

In the world of instructional design, creating training videos that engage, inform, and inspire learners is crucial. One tool that can streamline content creation is ChatGPT, especially when crafting effective prompts for video scripts. In this post, we'll walk through how to write clear and purposeful prompts for ChatGPT, which will result in well-structured and impactful training videos. Here's how to do it step by step:

1. Set the Role and Goal

Every effective prompt starts with clarity about the role you want ChatGPT to assume and the goal you want to achieve. This helps ensure that the output matches your expectations.

Example: Suppose you're creating a training video on conflict resolution for customer service teams. Your prompt could be:

Prompt: "As a professional customer service trainer, help me create a script for a training video on resolving customer conflicts. The goal is to teach employees how to stay calm, listen effectively, and offer solutions."

By setting the role of a customer service trainer and specifying the goal (teaching conflict resolution), the prompt is already focused, ensuring the response stays on track.

2. Research & Summarize

Before writing your prompt, conduct some research to gather key points that should be covered. Then, summarize this research to create a more informative and structured prompt.

Example: If you're making a video about time management for remote workers, your research might highlight key concepts like setting priorities, minimizing distractions, and using time-blocking techniques.

Prompt: "Summarize best practices for time management for remote workers, including techniques like time-blocking, setting daily goals, and minimizing distractions. Use these practices to create an engaging video script that will help remote employees work more efficiently."

Here, the prompt is more detailed, allowing ChatGPT to pull from research and provide a comprehensive script.

3. Design Personas and Characters

In instructional design, personas help guide the tone, style, and language of the content. Create a character that ChatGPT can refer to while developing the script, making the content more relatable.

Example: For the conflict resolution training video, create a persona for the customer service representative.

Prompt: "Write a script for a training video on conflict resolution where the main character is Sam, a customer service representative who struggles with staying calm during difficult calls. The video should help Sam learn how to stay composed and resolve conflicts effectively."

This personalized approach gives ChatGPT the context needed to design more engaging scenarios.

4. Create Content Outlines

Content outlines help break down the training video into sections. Outlining ensures that each part of the script is focused and logical.

Example: If you are creating a video about conflict resolution, your outline might look like this:

Prompt: "Create a training script outline for conflict resolution that covers these points: 1. Introduction to conflict resolution, 2. Techniques for active listening, 3. How to remain calm during difficult conversations, 4. Providing solutions, and 5. A conclusion with a self-reflection exercise."

By creating a structured outline within the prompt, you ensure that the generated script follows a logical sequence.

5. Create Examples and Scenarios

Training videos are much more engaging when they include realistic examples and scenarios. Encourage ChatGPT to create relatable situations where learners can apply what they've learned.

Example: For the time management video, create a scenario where an employee has to juggle multiple tasks.

Prompt: "Provide a scenario for a remote worker, ‘Anna,’ who is struggling to prioritize tasks. Show how she uses time-blocking to schedule her day and overcome distractions."

Including a real-life situation helps learners visualize how they can apply these concepts in their own work.

6. Write Better Titles and Hooks

The title and hook of a training video are crucial for drawing in your audience. Crafting a compelling prompt to generate these elements can set the tone for the entire video.

Example: If you're creating a video on time management, a strong title and hook can capture attention.

Prompt: "Generate a catchy title and opening line for a video on time management for remote workers. The title should highlight how viewers can improve their productivity. The opening line should be attention-grabbing and encourage viewers to continue watching."

This prompt ensures that ChatGPT creates a title and hook that make the video enticing to the audience.

7. Write Better ChatGPT Prompts

Once you've worked through the previous steps, focus on writing clear, concise prompts that leave little room for ambiguity. A well-written prompt will help generate more focused and high-quality responses.

Example: Combine all of the previous steps into one clear and direct prompt for a training video on conflict resolution.

Prompt: "As a customer service trainer, create a script for a video on conflict resolution. The video should include a scenario with a representative named Sam, who is learning to stay calm and listen actively during a difficult customer call. The video should cover active listening techniques, staying composed, and offering solutions. Include an engaging title and hook to capture the audience’s attention."

3 Sample Prompts Reflecting the Tips:

By following these tips and utilizing detailed, targeted prompts, you can create training videos that are engaging, informative, and effective for your audience. Let ChatGPT handle the hard work of scripting and focus on delivering content that matters most!

Pre-Production: Plan for Success

Before you hit record, careful planning and preparation are key.

Audio Tips: Crystal Clear Sound

Good audio quality makes a huge difference in viewer experience.

Example: If you’re filming in an office, unplug noisy equipment like printers or fans.

Lighting and Visuals: Make It Look Professional

Visual appeal is essential to keep your audience engaged.

Example: For a tutorial on software, record with a clean desk setup and use screen captures to emphasize key points.

Post-production is where your video comes to life.

Presentation: Engage Your Audience

Finally, focus on how your video looks and feels to the viewer.

Example: For an onboarding video, include a friendly introduction and use humor to make the content relatable.

Creating training videos might seem overwhelming, but with proper planning, good tools, and attention to detail, you can produce professional-quality videos that captivate your audience. Start small, improve with each attempt, and enjoy the creative process!

Transforming Education: The Future of eLearning

TransIn recent years, the landscape of education has undergone a significant transformation, largely driven by advancements in technology. eLearning, in particular, has embraced a range of innovative trends that enhance the teaching and learning experience. As an instructional designer with decades of experience and a passion for driving engagement through technology, I see these trends as the future of education.

Video Creation as a Learning Tool

Video has become a cornerstone of modern eLearning. With its ability to convey complex concepts through visuals, animations, and storytelling, video creation offers a dynamic and engaging way to educate learners. As a creator of video training materials, I’ve observed how video content can capture attention and simplify intricate topics. Learners benefit from the versatility of video, which allows for demonstrations, tutorials, and real-world simulations. Video content also accommodates diverse learning styles, making it an essential tool for fostering understanding and retention.

Microlearning and Mobile Learning

In our fast-paced world, attention spans are shrinking, making traditional lengthy training sessions less effective. Microlearning addresses this challenge by breaking down information into bite-sized chunks that are easier to digest. As a training specialist and instructional designer, I have witnessed firsthand how this approach resonates with learners, particularly when paired with mobile learning. Mobile platforms empower learners to access content anytime and anywhere, making education more flexible and convenient. Whether it’s on a commute, during a short break, or while waiting in line, learners can engage with content tailored to fit their schedules. This flexibility is transforming how we approach both corporate and academic training.

Gamification and Game-Based Learning

Learning doesn’t have to be a chore. The integration of gamification and game-based learning is transforming the educational experience by making it more engaging and enjoyable. By incorporating game design elements like points, badges, and leaderboards, educational content becomes more interactive. Over the years, I have designed training programs that leverage gamification to foster a sense of competition and achievement. These elements drive learners to immerse themselves in their studies, resulting in higher engagement and better knowledge retention. Gamification has proven to be particularly effective in compliance and safety training—areas I’m deeply familiar with—by turning otherwise dry topics into compelling learning experiences.

Social Learning and Collaboration

In the digital age, learning is increasingly becoming a social experience. Emphasizing collaborative learning environments and social interactions enriches the educational journey. Platforms that facilitate peer-to-peer interaction enable learners to share knowledge, discuss ideas, and collaborate on projects, enhancing understanding and retention. As someone who creates online training materials and fosters team-based learning experiences, I’ve seen how social learning not only boosts engagement but also builds a sense of community. This collaborative approach makes education a shared journey rather than a solitary endeavor, aligning with the human need for connection.

A Future Powered by Technology and Expertise

As technology continues to evolve, so does its potential to transform education. From artificial intelligence to virtual reality, the tools at our disposal are reshaping how we design and deliver training. My experience as an instructional designer has taught me that effective eLearning is about more than just technology—it’s about understanding the needs of learners and crafting experiences that inspire and empower them.

As we look to the future, the possibilities for eLearning are endless. By embracing trends like microlearning, gamification, social learning, and video creation, we can create educational experiences that are not only effective but also deeply engaging. The future of education lies in innovation, and I am excited to be part of this transformative journey.
